James Carey enters his second season as assistant general manager for the Iona University men's basketball program in 2026-27.
As assistant general manager, Carey supports all aspects of roster management, recruiting operations, player personnel evaluation, and program administration. A former Iona student-athlete, he brings a unique perspective to the role through his experience as both a player and administrator within the program.
Carey played three seasons for the Gaels as a walk-on under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, appearing in 18 career games. His most memorable performance came in a 93-60 victory over Siena at the Hynes Center, when he scored a career-high seven points. Prior to transferring to Iona, Carey played one season at Gettysburg College, an NCAA Division III institution in Pennsylvania, where he scored 10 points in 10 minutes of action while shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range.
A native of Pelham, New York, Carey was a four-year basketball letterwinner and two-year cross country letterwinner during his scholastic career at Pelham Memorial High School and Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky.
Carey earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Iona University in 2023 and completed his Master of Business Administration in Business Analytics & Information Systems in 2026. An accomplished student, Carey graduated summa cum laude with a 3.9 grade-point average and was actively involved in numerous academic organizations, including the Iona Honors Program, Finance Club, Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society, and Delta Epsilon Sigma National Honor Society. He also completed a minor in English and received Iona's Departmental Award for Finance, presented annually to the top graduating student in the major.
