Iona College men's soccer head coach Fernando Barboto announced the appointment of James Quiroga as an assistant coach in May of 2013. Quiroga joins the staff after serving as head coach of the Purchase College and Mount Saint Vincent men's soccer programs.
At Purchase, Quiroga turned a team that won one game in 2010 into a program on the cusp of Skyline Conference contention. Quiroga also mentored five All-Skyline Conference honorees.
Quiroga comes to the Panthers from the College of Mt. St. Vincent College where as head coach he guided an underachieving Dolphins team into playoff contention in the Skyline Conference. Quiroga improved the Dolphins and created a buzz in the Skyline Conference despite the Mount not being unable to field a team in the fall 2009 season.
Quiroga began his collegiate Division I coaching career at Iona in 2001. He was on the Iona staff through the 2004 season and helped the Gaels into Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament contention each season.
His duties in New Rochelle included tactical sessions, fitness and video. Administratively, he was responsible the monitoring of academic records and he also started data bases, calendars and records for the men’s soccer program.
Quiroga also works for FC Westchester Academy Club which was selected by the United States Soccer Federation to join the academy program. He has been with the program since 1997. With FC Westchester James has guided his team to the New York State finals in 2001, 2003, and 2008 and has won the New York State Championship five times: 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2009, and 2010.
Quiroga is one of the most successful coaches at the club level in New York history. In 2007, he guided his team to the Chelsea’s Disney National Invitational Tournament Championship and in 2004; Quiroga was elected the Super Y National Team Coach for the Region 1 team. He also holds several coaching licenses.
Quiroga graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies and History. He currently resides in New Rochelle, N.Y.
