Prior to Fordham, Volkert was head coach at Manhattan College. He led the Jaspers to the MAAC championships in each of his last two years. The Jaspers won the MAAC title as the No. 1 seed and made their second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament in Volkert’s final season as head coach. They fell to Pepperdine in the tournament and finished with a 21-14 record including 8-1 in the MAAC.

Additionally, Volkert also set the Manhattan school record for wins with 30 in 2002. That same year, he also led the team to its first MAAC Championship and first NCAA appearance. In 2000, Volkert was named MAAC Coach of the Year after a 23-11 season.

Prior to Manhattan, Volkert served as the head volleyball coach at Pace University from 1994-96. He led the program to the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) Tournament in 1994 after a 5-22 record in 1993. Volkert also propelled the Setters to the ECAC Tournament in 1995 and the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament in 1996. The Setters earn a 14th and 19th national ranking in winning percentage in NCAA Division II under Volkert’s lead.

Volkert also served as head men’s volleyball coach from 1993-94 at Concordia College. He took a program that had won just one match in 1992 to a fifth place ranking in the east for NCAA Division II schools. Volkert also coached on the high school level, serving as head women’s volleyball coach at Good Counsel High School in White Plains, NY in 1993 where his team finished fourth in the New York State Finals.

Volkert is a 1992 graduate of Concordia College with a bachelor’s degree in history and second education. Additionally, Volkert graduated from Iona with master’s degrees in multicultural education and educational administration.
