Brian Beyrer returns for his 23rd year with Iona University Athletics in 2023-24. He has served as Senior Associate AD for Athletic Communications since August 2016.
From 2016-2019, Beyrer was also in charge of the public relations efforts for Iona University in the Office of University Marketing and Communications in addition to oversight of athletic communications.
In his athletics role, Beyrer oversees all communications and media relations efforts for Iona’s NCAA Division I athletic programs. He serves as department spokesman and is the chief editor and publisher for all athletic publications, and media releases. During the summer of 2002 and again in the winter of 2006-07, Beyrer was responsible for creation and design the new official Iona Athletics website from the ground up.
In addition, Beyrer spearheaded Iona’s partnership with ESPN via its School Productions Program. Iona Athletics and the Mass Communication Department teamed to produce men’s and women’s basketball games on ESPN3 for the first time in February 2016. He was also involved in the redesign of athletics branding in summer 2013.
Beyrer was recognized in April 2018 by the Metropolitan Basketball Wrtier's Association with the Mike Cohen "Good Guy" award. The honor is named in memory of Mike Cohen, former head of sports information at NBC Sports and Manhattan College, and former publicity director at Yonkers Raceway. He also was a consultant to Fordham University and operated his own public relations firm prior to his untimely passing in 1988 at the age of 44. Anyone involved in college basketball in the New York metropolitan area is eligible for this award; the only criteria is that they --- male or female --- be a "Good Guy."
Beyrer served a dual-role in Iona's University Marketing and Communications for three years from August 2016-August 2019 as Director of College and Athletic Communications. Beyrer was named Associate AD for Athletic Communications in the Summer of 2008, after spending three years as an Assistant AD and four years as Assistant Sports Information Director.
In 2006, Beyrer volunteered his time with the New York Mets Media Relations Department during the National League Division and Championship Series.
While an Assistant SID, Beyrer was responsible for the editing and formatting of content on Iona’s official athletic website, while also serving as a PA announcer for various athletic events, a role he will continue to handle. In addition, Beyrer had served as the primary contact for the Gaels’ women’s basketball and hockey teams.
Beyrer has participated on numerous committees and organizations at Iona University, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and at the national level. Most notably at Iona, he has been a member of Iona's Alumni Board of Directors from 2011-2019, the college's Staff and Administrative Council from 2012-14, 2016-18 and 2019-20 along with the college governance's Human Resources and Compensation Committee, IT Committee and Committee on Athletics. He has also served on several hiring committees within athletics including: Assistant AD/Marketing and Ticket Operations, Assistant Directors of Athletic Communications, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball, and volleyball head coaching positions. At the MAAC level, he has been a part of the league's marketing directors, sports information directors and technology committee since their formations. He was also a member of the men's soccer championship committee in 2009-10 and women's soccer committee from 2010-17.
He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America and the United States Basketball Writers Association.
Beyrer is a 2001 graduate of Iona, earning a degree in Computer Science. He pursued a master’s degree in the same. A native of Putnam Valley, New York, Beyrer resides in Port Chester with his wife Kelly ’16MA, daughter Shea and son Brian II.
