Ryan Whalen enters his first season with the Iona College men's basketball program and will serve as a video coordinator. Whalen comes to New Rochelle after spending last season at Towson University.
The 2008 graduate of Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA Whalen was an administrative assistant and video coordinator under former Iona head coach Pat Kennedy at Towson in 2008-09. At Saint Joseph's, Whalen played two years of JV basketball for the Hawks before becoming a student assistant coach for Phil Martelli.
In the summer of 2007 he served an internship with the Philadelphia 76ers. He earned his degree in food marketing.
Whalen attended Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch, N.J. where he lettered in basketball (shooting guard) and football (wide receiver and defensive back). He also played AAU ball for the Jersey City Boys Club, winning five straight New Jersey state titles. Whalen hails from an athletic family. His dad served as an assistant to Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s High School which finished 2007-08 as the nation’s number one ranked prep team with a perfect 32-0 record. A younger sister is currently attending East Stroudsburg where she plays field hockey. An older sister played field hockey while an undergraduate at Villanova.
