Pat Carey recently completed his twelfth season as the head coach of the Iona College baseball team. He was hired as the fifth head coach in program history in July 2005.

This past season of 2017 was not only the most successful for Carey at the helm of the Gaels, but also marked the highest point the Maroon & Gold program reached since the 2000 season. With a 14-10 MAAC record, Iona earned a berth into the MAAC Championship field for the first time since 2017. With that success, Carey was honored as the MAAC Coach of the Year and helped lead the Gaels into the MAAC Championship Final Round behind four wins including three elimination game victories.

Under Carey’s tenure, the Maroon & Gold have seen multiple student-athletes go on to be drafted into Major League Baseball included Jared Finkel being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 23rd round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Previously, Mariano Rivera Jr. was selected by the Washington Nationals in the fourth round in the 2015 draft. Since 2005, Chris Burke was drafted in the 18th round in 2012 by the San Diego Padres, and James Lasala was selected by the Yankees in the 44th round in 2006.

Though the Gaels struggled on the field in their first season under coach Carey, he has rededicated his players their intensity on both the diamond and in the classroom. In the 2006 fall semester, the baseball team achieved a 3.08 GPA, the first time in program history that the squad has surpassed the 3.00 level. The academic success continued through his first three seasons in New Rochelle.

Carey came to New Rochelle after spending the 2005 season as an assistant coach at Fordham University. The Rams enjoyed one of their finest seasons in almost a decade with Carey on the staff, making an appearance in the Atlantic-10 Baseball Championship tournament, while posting a 34-17 record.

The 20-year old native of Stony Point, NY began his collegiate coaching career at Rockland Community College. After serving as an assistant coach for three years, Carey took over the program in 2003. In his two seasons at the helm, RCC posted a record of 44-28 (.611), while capturing the Mid-Hudson Conference and ABCA Region XV Championships twice. In 2003, his squad cracked the NJCAA Division II Top 30 National Poll and, in 2004, began the season ranked #12 on the Preseason National Poll. For his efforts, Carey was named the ABCA Region XV Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004.

As a student-athlete, Carey excelled at Rockland Community College from 1994-96, earning Mid-Hudson Conference Player of the Year honors in 1996 before matriculating to Providence College. He was PC's starting shortstop from 1996-98 and is the career Big East Tournament batting leader (.667).

Carey also had plenty of success at the high school level. Starring for North Rockland High School, Carey was the USA Today New York State Player of the Year runner-up and The Journal News Player of the Year in 1994. He played on three New York State Class A Championship teams at North Rockland from 1992 to 1994, and was twice named All-County and All-League.
