New Rochelle, NY - An overtime penalty kick netted by Maciek Sliwinski led Iona men's soccer to a 1-0 win over MAAC rival Rider this afternoon. Both teams endured a brief downpour in the game's opening and continued to battle windy conditions throughout. The Gaels improved their record to 5-6-4 overall (2-3-1 MAAC).

The Gaels and the Broncs both presented solid defense, finding themselves at a stalemate upon the expiration of regulation play. During the first 90 minutes, Iona out-shot Rider 16-9 and led with 4 corner kicks to Rider's 2.

Iona's best chances to score came midway through the second half. In the 76th minute Bryan Oelkers set off a shot which was blocked by a Bronc. The Gaels recovered the ball and seconds later Rider goalkeeper Daniel Riverso made a nice save on a ball off the foot of Tonna Egbuchanum.

A series of fouls called on the opposition put the Maroon & Gold in a favorable position. After an offsides call and two fouls, Taurean Manders was fouled in front of the net, giving Sliwinski a chance to go for the win on a penalty kick. The captain knocked a light swish past Riverso, setting off a victory cheer for the Gaels.

The team's final home game of the season will take place on Sunday, Oct. 22 against Loyola. Four graduating seniors will be honored before the game, which is slated for 12:00 pm.
