Niagara Univ., NY - A late Niagara score resulted in a 1-1 tie for the Iona College men's soccer team on Friday afternoon. The Gaels (6-6-5, 3-3-2) close out the regular season on Sunday at Canisius.
Iona took the lead in the 34th minute of the first half. Fernando Liserra worked a give-and-go with Nicholas Smaldone for his second goal of the season to put the Gaels in front, 1-0.
The Purple Eagles finally evened the score in the 75th minute. Brian Leonard headed in a throw from Billy Gustafson for his first score of the season, and the final 35 minutes of the game were scorless as Iona was forced to settle for a draw.
Both teams drew three yellow cards in a physical match that saw each squad whistled for 17 fouls. The Gaels enjoyed a 15-8 shot advantage on the day, as well as an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Nils Binstock had three saves over 110 minutes in net for Iona, while John Fiutowski had four stops for the Purple Eagles. Smaldone had a game-high five shot attempts.
