GAELS CLIP CANISIUS, 1-0

Buffalo, NY - Michael Ferenci scored in the 26th minute, and goalkeeper Nils Binstock made five saves to post the shutout as Iona College defeated Canisius College 1-0 in men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.

On a cold, windy day at the Demske Sports Complex, each team had the advantage of having the wind at its back for a half. Iona had the advantage in the first frame and scored when Bryan Oelkers took a hard shot from about 25 yards out that bounced off Canisius keeper Matt Houghton and right to the foot of Ferenci inside the penalty area. The junior tucked the shot into the left corner to give the Gaels (7-6-5, 4-3-2) the lead. Iona outshot Canisius 14-4 for the half.

In the second half, the tables were turned, but Canisius could not capitalize with the wind at its back. The Griffs' had two good scoring chances and outshot Iona 12-3. Alan McGreal smoked a shot from about 35 yards out that was turned aside by Binstock. The Griffs had a corner with 50 seconds left that went across the mouth of the goal where Adam Studniarek was trying to volley it in, but the freshman could not get a foot on it.

Fernando Liserra had a team-best seven shots for Iona. The Gaels picked up six yellow cards on the day.
