CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Jarrid Frye had 16 points and six steals and Sacred Heart held off Iona 68-61 on Wednesday in a consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Frye hit 7-of-11 shots, but his leg cramped up after a scramble for a loose ball with under 2 minutes remaining and he did not return.
Luke Granato added 14 points and Joey Henley added 13 for the Pioneers (1-2).
De'Shaune Griffin scored all 17 of his points in the second half and grabbed nine rebounds, while freshman Milan Prodanovic added 11 points for the Gaels (0-2), who shot 36 percent and committed 24 turnovers.
A night after giving No. 2 North Carolina a fight for more than a half, Sacred Heart raced out to as much as a 12-point lead in the first half while holding Iona to 9-of-37 shooting.
The Pioneers, who held a 51-29 rebounding advantage, saw their lead cut to five with 1:56 left. But Iona, struggling after losing four starters from last season's NCAA tournament team, got no closer in the first meeting between the schools since 1981.
Sacred Heart played without junior Ryon Howard, who injured his right knee in Tuesday's loss to North Carolina. A school spokesman said he'll undergo an MRI later this week.
Only a handful of fans witnessed the game, which was played after the Tar Heels beat Winthrop in the regional championship game.
