COLUMBA SCORED WET 4-2 VICTORY OVER IONA

New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team endured extremely wet conditions, but was unable to top a tough Columbia team. The Lions notched a 4-2 win this afternoon at Mazzella Field.

The first goal of the game came early in the first half, as Gael Maciek Sliwinski gained control of a loose ball in front of the net and knocked it in in the tenth minute. The goal was Sliwinski's fourth on the season, and his fifth would come in the 86th minute off of a penalty kick. Both goals were unassisted. Today's performance marked Sliwinski's second two-goal game of 2006.

The trend for Columbia's afternoon was to beat goalie Nils Binstock to the ball, as that was how all four of the Lions' goals were scored. Tom Smith and Ryan Scully both scored from in front of the net in the first half, and Chris Wales and Tom Davison both hit lobs into an empty net in the second half.

As the rain increased, so did aggression on the field. Six yellow cards were handed out, two of which went to Gaels Ben Williams and Sliwinski. Iona outshot Columbia 19-8, and held a ten to two advantage in corner kicks.

Iona will look to turn things around in their next game at Fordham on Sep. 20.
