New Rochelle, NY - Although they played with the upper hand throughout most of the afternoon, the Iona College men's soccer team came away with a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Marist. The Gaels governed considerable possession in their first MAAC contest of the season, but were unable to turn many of their shot attempts into shot successes.
The game looked to be a steal early in the first half, as the ball rarely was played inside Iona's defensive half of the field. The Maroon & Gold caught a tough break when their opponent scored on a possession that came off of a called foul in front of the net. The Gaels out-shot the Redfoxes 12-3 in the first period. Marist would not take another shot until the second overtime phase.
In the game's 41st minute, Bryan Oelkers sent off a kick, which was rebounded off the foot of Ben Williams before being headed into the net by co-captain Maciek Sliwinski. The goal was Sliwinski's sixth of the season.
By game's end, Iona held a 25-6 shot advantage and led Marist 10-1 in corner kicks. Nils Binstock played the entire game in goal for the Gaels.
The team will have a day off before hosting Siena on Sunday at noon.
