Fairfield, CT - After the match was postponed a day due to weather, the Iona College women's soccer team and Fairfield were locked in tight battle all afternoon Saturday that ended tied 1-1 after double overtime. The Gaels (2-13-1, 0-4-1) got on the scoreboard first as freshman Ali Werner netted her second goal of the season in the 58th minute to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead.
The first half was scoreless as neither team could find the back of the net. The Stags (7-6-2, 3-1-1) outshot the Gaels 7 to 5 in the first half and had two shots reach Gaels' junior keeper Suzanne Baldissard.
Werner broke the scoreless tie as she came across the box and got free on the near side of the field. As she controlled the ball deep in the Fairfield end, Werner put the ball right up the line and into the upper corner just inside both the post and cross bar past to make it 1-0. The Stags answered in the 65th minute as Alex Caram scored to tie the game. Janna Breitenwischer brought the into the right side of the box and crossed it to the middle for Casey Frobey. Frobey then touch passed it to Caram who just touched it in past Baldissard.
The Gaels had their chances to take home thier first MAAC victory of the season. The Gaels missed a shot wide with about 11 minutes remaining but their best chance came with just 67 seconds left. The Maroon and Gold had a free kick and senior Christina Rizzi got her head on the ball but it just sailed high as time expired in regulation with the score tied.
Fairfield outshot the Gaels 6 to 1 in the two overtime periods and the game ended in 1-1 tie. Rizzi lead the Gaels with 8 shots, 4 on goal while sophomore Mariel Pepe recorded 3 shots with 2 on net. Junior Liz Allan had 2 shots, both on net as did Werner who netted the Gaels' only goal. Baldissard made 8 saves in net which takes her season total to 72. Fairfield netminder Brett Maron made 10 saves.
The Gaels are back in action as they head to Jersey City to face MAAC conference foe Saint Peter's on Friday, October 26 at 4 pm.
