Jersey City, NJ - The Iona College women's soccer team played in their second straight
double overtime contest as they took on Saint Peters. The Gaels
(3-13-1, 1-4) found themselves down early in the match as the Peahens
(1-15, 0-7) got on the scoreboard just about 6 minutes into the game.
The Gaels though bounced back to tie the game at the 31:38 mark and the
game remained tied at the end of regulation.
The Peahens picked up their goal as Renne Morin scored off an assist from Katelyn Matousek at the 5:57 mark of the first half. The Gaels battled back and evened the score as freshman Carol Danis picked up her first assist of the season setting up junior Liz Allan for her second goal of the year.
The teams went back and forth to end the first half and throughout most of the second half. The Gaels outshot the Peahens 19 to 3 at the end of regulation. Both goaltenders, Iona's junior keeper Suzanna Baldissard and Saint Peter's Leigha Ashmen, didn't budge in overtime as the game was still scoreless.
In the second overtime, the game came down to who could step up and make the big play and the Gaels rose to the occasion. Just 2:21 into the second overtime period, freshman Catherine Pomeroy sent one towards the net that hit the goalie, then the post and trickled across the goal line to end the game. The Gaels finished the two overtime periods with eight shots compared to just two for Saint Peter's.
The Gaels outshot the Peahens 16 to 5 in shots on goal. Baldissard finished with four saves while Ashmen stopped 14 shots. Freshman Carol Danis lead all players with six shots, four on goal and senior Christina Rizzi had with six shots, three on goal. Sophomore Mariel Pepe and Pomeroy each took three shots with two on net and Pomeroy netting the game winner. Freshmen Ali Werner and Lauren Ruocco each added a shot on goal.
The Gaels are back in action as they head to Riverdale, NY to take on Manhattan on Sunday, October 28 at 10 am.
