Riverdale, NY - Freshman Carol Danis, Sophomore Mariel Pepe and Junior Liz Allan notched goals for the Iona College women's soccer team in a 3-1 victory over Manhattan Sunday afternoon. The Gaels (4-13-1, 2-4-1) and the Jaspers (6-7-4,3-4-1) were scoreless after the first half with the Maroon and Gold controlling the flow and outshooting Manhattan 8 to 4.
The Gaels got on the scoreboard just 1:16 into the second half as Allan fed Pepe who put a through ball onto the foot of Danis. Danis then put it past Jaspers' keeper Alicia DeFino in the lower right corner for her sixth of the season and made it 1-0 Iona.
The Jaspers tied the score in the 61st minute as Brittany Duhamel fed one that was headed home by Rachel Pannullo. The Gaels though wanted to finish this game in regulation and they took the lead almost six minutes later. Sophomore Amber Blocher put a perfect through ball onto the foot of Pepe, who deked DeFino and gave the Gaels a 2-1 advantage. Less than two minutes later, the Maroon and Gold put the game out of reach as senior Christina Rizzi's shot was saved but Allan fired home the rebound for the goal and the Gaels took a 3-1 victory.
Junior keeper Suzanne Baldissard made five saves while DeFino had seven saves. Allan led the Gaels with three shots, two on net, to go along with her goal and assist and Pepe had two shots, both on net. Rizzi had two shots, one on net, and Blocher had a shot on goal along with her assist. Freshman Lauren Machtel had two shots, both on goal, and sophomre Alison Moroni had a shot on net coming off the bench.
The Gaels return to action and Mazzella Field on Friday, November 2 to face-off against Rider at 3 pm.
