Poughkeepsie, NY - The Iona College men's swimming and diving team opened their 2007-08 season against defending MAAC Champions Marist. The Gaels (0-1) took four of the thirteen events but fell short as the Red Foxes (2-1) took a 142-84 victory.
Sophomore David Gartman took home the 100 Freestyle as he touched the wall with a time of 49.81. He edged out second place Joshua Sklanka from Marist by .16 seconds (49.97). Senior Jason Felix came in fourth in the race with a time of 51.36.
Sophomore Daniel Pflager and senior Eric Nowakowski gave the Gaels a 1-2 finish in the 500 freestyle. Pflager touched first at 5:19.17 with Nowakowski coming in at 5:24.77. The Gaels also had a 1-2 finish in the 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Matthew Magura set the pace with a time of 2:21.66 and junior transfer Karim Mabrouk finished about eight seconds back at 2:29.53.
The Maroon & Gold claimed the 400 freestyle relay as the team of senior Jason Felix, sophomores David Gartman and Joe Przekota, and senior William Walsh touched first at 3:23.34. The second team of seniors Eric Nowakowski and Mark Rich, sophomore Daniel Pflager, and junior Ed Gronkowski came in at 3:39.94.
The Gaels return to the pool as they welcome Canisius to the Hynes Athletic Center pool on Saturday, December 1 at 10 am.
