Box Score Norfolk, VA - The Iona College men's basketball team lost its fourth straight game to start the season in a 73-62 defeat at Old Dominion. Junior
Devon Clarke tallied 17 points and had five rebounds in the contest. The Gaels (0-4) and Monarchs (3-1) contest was a part of the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Invitational.
The Maroon & Gold began the game strong, taking an 8-2 lead into the first media timeout. Clarke and senior
Dexter Gray each had two buckets during the stretch. Old Dominion rallied to knot the score at 16-16 took a lead on a Brandon Johnson three pointer and never looked back.
Trailing by 12 points with 5:58 remaining, Iona crept back and got to within six points on freshman
Rashon Dwight's layup. Marsharee Neely scored the game's next five points to give the Monarchs a double digit lead. His heavily contested three-pointer from nearly 30-feet away and the shot clock expiring would have been a dagger for the Gaels had sophomore
De'Shaune Griffin not answered right away with a clutch three of his own.
The Gaels again got to within six points with 53 seconds remaining, but could not get any closer as ODU converted seven of eight free throws in the final minute.
Gray complemented Clarke's scoring output with 16 points while grabbing a team-high seven boards. Senior
Kyle Camper netted 10 points to go along with his second straight five assist effort. Despite outshooting the Monarchs, 49.1%-40.3%, Iona was again hurt on the boards (40-28 ODU advantage) and free throw disparity (17-5 ODU advantage in FTM).
Sophomore Gerald Lee shot 9-of-13 from the field to score a game-high 19 points. He also led his team with 7 rebounds. Johnson added a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.
Both teams head to Las Vegas tomorrow morning for the championship round of the Invitational. Iona takes on South Carolina State on Friday (Nov. 23) afternoon while the Monarchs take on No. 1 North Carolina at Orleans Arena.
