New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team honored the three seniors, Megan
Turnbull, Christina Rizzi and Leeann Sudol, before the game. The Gaels
(5-14-1, 3-5-1) battled with Loyola but were down 1-0 just eight
minutes into the game. Lina Staropoli fed Christina Gomez from five
yards out for a one-timer to give the Greyhounds (8-5-5, 5-0-4) the
lead. The Gaels thought didn't allow the Greyhounds to extend the lead
and kept the game at a one goal deficit.
Junior Liz Allan put the Gaels right back in the game in the 55th minute. Freshman Ali Werner fed Allan who lobbed one over the head of Loyola keeper Amanda Piccirilli to tie the game at 1-1. Starapoli and Gomez again hooked up as off the corner kick, Gomez headed the ball past junior keeper Suzanne Baldissard to make it 2-1 Loyola.
The Gaels, though, didn't stay down for long. In the 80th minute, Sudol crossed the ball from the right top of the box and found the foot of Werner. Werner then one-timed it past the keeper for her third goal of the season and the equalizer.
Neither was able to net another tally but both Iona and Loyola had their chances at the end of regulation. The Greyhounds outshot the Gaels 13-10 in regulation. In overtime, each team again had their opportunities but couldn't capitalize. In the 100th minute, Gomez fired one that deflected off the crossbar. Lea Day fired home the rebound and the Gaels fell 3-2.
The Greyhounds outshot the Gaels 5-1 in the extra period and 11-6 in shots on goal for the game. Iona held the advantage on corner kicks 3-2. Piccirilli finished with four saves while Baldissard finished with seven saves.
The Gaels closed out the season with a record of 5-14-1 and 3-5-1 in the MAAC.
