IONA BESTED BY STONY BROOK, 66-57 IN 2007-08 OPENER

Stony Brook, NY - Seniors Lauren DeFalco and Tiara Headen each put up ten points in the Iona College women's basketball team's (0-1) 66-57 loss to Stony Brook in the season opener.  Aly Young led the Seawolves with 13 points.

The hosts began the contest with a jumper by Young to take a short lived 2-0 lead, as DeFalco deposited her first of two trifectas on the night to put the Gaels up 3-2.  After two scoreless minutes, Jessica Smith added a bucket to increase Iona's lead.  Stony Brook moved back in front at 8-7 on a layup by Joia Daniels, and led by as much as six in the half.

At the 3:27 mark, DeFalco hit another three to move the Maroon & Gold ahead by one point.  Iona held onto the advantage until there were seven seconds remaining in the period when Jodie Plikus scored from long range, bringing the game to halftime at 34-33 in favor of the Seawolves.

The Gaels were never able to regain control as the Seawolves outscored them 21-10 in the initial five minutes of the second segment.  Kirsten Jeter connected for five straight points to bring Stony Brook to its largest lead of the night, a 16-point spread at 60-44 with 5:32 on the clock.  Iona managed to cut the deficit to nine by the final buzzer.

Despite the loss, Iona had a better shooting percentage in the first half (40.6%-37.9%) and in the game (36.1%-35.9%).  The Gaels were outrebounded 53-46 and put Stony Brook at the foul line 31 times, while only getting there on 19 occasions.

Iona will play another game on the road before returning to New Rochelle.  The squad will face off against Hofstra on Nov. 11 at 2:00 pm.
