Milan Prodanovic scored 18 points to lead five players in double digit scoring as the Iona College men's basketball team earned an 87-81 victory over New Hampshire at Lundholm Gym. The Gaels (3-7) used an 11-0 run late in the second to take the lead for good.
Iona started the game looking like it they would cruise to an easy victory with a 12-point, 19-7, lead at the 13:06 mark. The Wildcats (3-7), however, chipped away and erased their deficit when Tyrece Gibbs hit one of six three pointers on the day to give the home team a 23-22 lead at 7:32. New Hampshire scored 12 straight at one point during the stretch. The Maroon & Gold regrouped and took a 39-35 advantage into halftime.
The Gaels held a single-digit lead for the first seven-plus minutes of the second half. After a conventional three-point by
Devon Clarke put Iona up by three at 12:11, UNH went on a 10-2 run to take its largest lead, 64-59, of the contest. The Wildcats caught fire from long distance, connecting on three straight three pointers during the run. Again, Iona settled down, turned up defensive pressure and quickly scored 11 straight points to regain a comfortable lead. During the second 11-0 run of the contest, sophomore
De'Shaune Griffin scored seven points and had two assists to spark Iona's win.
Prodanovic matched a career-high with four three pointers and 18 points in the win. Griffin and senior
Dexter Gray netted 13 points in support of Prodanovic. Gray shot 4-of-5 from the field scoring all 13 points in the first half. Senior
Devon Clarke added 12 points while his classmate,
Kyle Camper, matched a career-high with 11. Camper shared a game-high with five rebounds and three assists.
The Gaels shot a season-best 60.0% from the field including an incredible 16-of-24 (66.7%) in the second half.
Gibbs and Eric Gilchrese had 20 points a piece for the Wildcats who dropped their sixth straight contest. Gilchrese had a game-high eight assists. Senior leading scorer Mike Christensen was held to just eight points on 2-of-8 shooting but grabbed eight boards and dished out six assists in the loss.
The Gaels complete a three-game road trip on Wednesday (Dec. 19) night when they take on Saint Francis (Pa.) in Loretto for a 7:00 pm tipoff.
