Lawrenceville, NJ - Senior Martina Weber had a game-high 17 points and classmate Regan Pettijohn recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Iona College women's basketball team dominated Rider 77-50 at Alumni Gym. The Gaels (18-11, 13-5 MAAC) complete the 2006-07 regular season as the No. 2 seed in the MAAC and will take on the winner of No. 7 Saint Peter's and No. 10 Rider on Friday (Mar. 2) morning at 9:30 am.
Rider junior Janele Henderson led her squad with 10 points to go along with three rebounds, sinking eight-of-eight from the free throw line.
Iona jumped out to a 20-9 lead with Weber scoring six of the first eight points for the Gaels. The Maroon & Gold held the Broncs to just three field goals over the game's first nine minutes.
Rider cut the Iona lead to seven at the 7:27 mark on a layup by Stephanie Wisniewski. The Gaels then went on a 9-0 run on the contributions of Anna McLean, Joanne Smith, and Jen Ritz to lead 31-15 with 1:20 left on the clock. Iona carried a 13 point lead into halftime.
The Gaels held the Broncs to two field goals and seven points in the opening nine minutes of the second half. They eventually opened up a 40 point lead before Rider closed the game on a 23-10 run for the final score.
Iona's defense held Rider to 25.5% shooting from the floor while the Gaels knocked down 50.9% of their field goals. The Maroon & Gold finished with a 52-24 rebound advantage.
