New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team currently posts a 2-5-0 record after a 2-1 defeat by Mount St. Mary's this afternoon at Mazella Field. Despite several good scoring opportunities, the Maroon & Gold was unable to capitalize after falling behind.
Gael senior Bryan Oelkers put Iona on the board early in the game, scoring on a penalty kick in the 18th minute. A handball in goal range by the Mount set up the shot for Oelkers, who lined the ball past visiting goalkeeper Chris Davis. The goal was the co-captian's second on the season.
Iona nearly missed a chance to take a two goal lead when Aly Lo set off on a breakaway. Lo cranked a fast shot, but Davis made a great save to keep his team within one. Lo came close again in the second half, missing a header off a cross from Fernando Liserra.
Mount St. Mary's tied the game at one with a goal by Eric Detzel. Detzel netted a rebound off a serve attempt by Scott Phinith in the 67th minute. The Mount later took the lead in the 79th minute. A pass by Tim Lees pulled Iona netminder Nils Binstock out of the box, allowing James Zabel to shuffle past for the wide open shot. Lees earned the assist on the score.
Both teams recorded nine shots, while the Gaels held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Binstock made two saves in goal before being replaced by Robert Blake for the final 11 minutes.
Iona returns to action with a pair of road games over the weekend. The squad first faces Monmouth on Saturday (Sep. 22) at 2:00 pm.
