New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team dropped its 2007 season opener today at Mazzella Field. The Gaels (0-1) were defeated by Fordham (1-0) 1-0.
The game got off to a mild start, with neither team able to maintain possession of the ball for a significant amount of time. Iona goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard made five saves in the contest, all coming in the first half on seven first half shots by the Rams.
The Gaels came to life in the second period setting off four shots, three of them on goal. Fordham's Katie Sanchez scored the lone goal of the match, netting a header off a corner kick from Alexis Ribadeneyra in the 66th minute, less than one minute following the substition of both players into the game.
Iona trailed 12-5 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks. Baldissard's five saves outnumbered Jen Byer's three for the Rams. Co-captain Christina Rizzi led the squad with two shots on goal. Abby Dixon had one.
The Maroon & Gold will be back in action on Sep. 5, facing Stony Brook at 7:00 pm.
