Fairfield, CT - Iona College men's soccer is off to a 1-1 start to the 2007 season after dropping a 3-1 decision to Sacred Heart. Despite a late goal by sophomore Fabian Contreras, the Gaels were unable to surpass the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart got on the board early, scoring in the sixth minute on a goal by Jesper Fredriksson. The Pioneers inbounded the ball across the field where Fredriksson was waiting to boost it past Iona goalkeeper Nils Binstock. Fredriksson would add one more for the host team later in the half, bringing Sacred Heart's lead to 2-0.
The Gaels joined in the scoring action in the second period as Contreras netted his first goal of the season on a shot from 30 yards out in the 73rd minute. The Pioneers were not done, however, with Svetozar Gladic lobbing a penalty shot over the head of Binstock for the final goal of the afternoon.
The Maroon & Gold held a 16-11 edge in shot attempts while taking six shots on goal. Binstock made three saves in the net.
Iona will participate in the Adidas Kickoff Classic next weekend. They'll face Navy on Sep. 7 in Baltimore.
