New Rochelle, NY - In a gritty match at the Hynes Athletics Center tonight, the Iona College volleyball team defeated La Salle 3-2 for its first victory of 2007. Both sides traded wins in games one through four, taking the match to a deciding game five.
Iona freshman
Allison Nieters set a school record with an incredible 43 digs including 17 alone in game four. She broke the previous mark set by former Iona liberos Katie Jellison (vs. Qunnipiac, 9/6/02) and Chelsea White (vs. Stony Brook, 9/18/04).
It was an all round effort in the win as sophomore
Sarah Wiener and juniors
Kendall Paulus and
Alyssa Morales each recorded double-doubles in the win. Weiner had 16 kills and 11 digs while Paulus recorded 14 kills and 19 digs. Morales, the Gaels setter, had 57 assists to go along with 12 digs and three blocks.
Rookie middle blocker
Colleen Genett had a breakout game in Maroon & Gold recording a season-high 15 kills to go along with seven blocks. Senior
Kristin Allain led the way with 18 kills. Senior
Katie Brilla had eight kills, nine digs and five blocks in the win. Rookie
Angie Mifsud recorded 16 digs.
Next up for the Maroon & Gold is the Georgetown Classic, being held this weekend (Sep. 7-8) in our nation's capital. First to face Iona on Friday is Towson.
