New Rochelle, NY - Anna McLean was Iona's leading scorer and rebounder, posting 13 points and 13 boards for a double-double in the Gaels' 67-58 win over Rider at the Hynes Athletics Center. Iona (8-6, 2-1 MAAC) claimed its fourth consecutive victory and its third straight at home while the Broncs (5-9, 0-3 MAAC) remain winless in conference action.
Iona never trailed in the contest and had jumped out to a 12-point lead by the 13:45 mark. Rider then put together a 10-2 run over the ensuing seven minutes, climbing to within four points on a trifecta by Danielle Costantino with 6:16 on the clock. A Tiara Headen layup helped the Gaels bounce back as they stretched the advantage to 20 points with just 50 seconds remaining in the first half. Shannon Ferguson netted a shot off the glass to add two for the Broncs, then Shezaray Rozzell knocked down a thrilling three pointer to send the game into halftime with Iona ahead 35-14.
The Maroon & Gold's largest lead of the day was a 29 point spread following a Suzi Fregosi shot from behind the arc at 13:01 in the second half. That lead dwindled down to 11 points as Rider went on a 19-1 run, making the score 52-41 with 6:33 remaining. The Broncs would get to as close as seven but the Gaels sealed the win on two free throws by Headen.
Iona returns to action on the road with two games in upstate New York. The squad will first face Niagara on Jan. 10 at 7:00 pm.
