NEW ROCHELLE, NY - After leading much of the game, the Iona College women's soccer team surrendered a goal in the closing minutes which led to a 3-2 defeat by Canisius at Mazzella Field. Freshman Sarah Porco scored both of Iona's goals to become the second player this season to record multiple goals in a match.
Her first came in the eighth minute off an assist from Stephanie Sommers to give the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 lead. The Golden Griffins tied things up in the 25th minute on Kelly Reinwald's first of two tallies, leading to a 1-1 halftime score.
The Gaels regained the advantage early in the second half as Porco struck again, this time helped by Caitlin Steinberg, seven minutes into the period. Iona's defenders maintained a solid front and limited Canisius's chances to score, holding onto a 2-1 lead for the next 24 minutes. The Griffs, however, managed to tie the score once again and surpassed the Gaels with two goals in a ten minute span to come away with the win.
Iona topped several statistical categories, leading 14-13 in shots, 7-4 in corner kicks and 7-4 in saves. Kelly Mahoney made her sixth start of the year in front of the net and played for all 90 minutes.
The Gaels wrap up the weekend homestand on Sunday (Oct. 12), hosting Niagara at 12:00 pm.
