NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Niagara in MAAC action at Mazzella Field.
The host Gaels (2-13-0, 1-3-0 MAAC) registered a 10-4 first half advantage in the shot column and an 18-11 advantage in the contest. The Purple Eagles (9-4-1, 2-2-0 MAAC) broke through twice in the opening period, first on a goal by Caitlyn Kilkenny in the eighth minute and later on a Caitlin Long goal in the 15th minute.
"I think we have to do a better job in the first half of these games," said head coach Eric Teepe. "We carried the play but we didn't take care of our opportunities and got a little bit careless defensively. We allowed them to score on their only two chances in the half."
Chiara Greco added Niagara's third goal of the game with under two minutes remaining in the match. Sarah Porco, Ali Werner, Stephanie Sommers, Diane Hare, and Alison Moroni contributed to Iona's eight shots on goal. The Maroon & Gold attempted seven corner kicks while the visiting Purple Eagles had three. Goalkeeper Kelly Mahoney made six saves over 90 minutes.
Teepe added, "We continued to battle, but we just have to find a way to get in front of these games and be able to finish them off."
Iona travels to face Siena at 3:00 pm on Oct. 17.
