POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team came back from a 1-0 deficit, scoring two goals in the second half to take a 2-1 win over Marist on the road. Freshman forward Sarah Porco netted her team leading fourth goal of the year with sophomore Abby Dixon adding the game-winner on her first career goal.
After a scoreless opening half, the Red Foxes took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alexandra Lauterborn in the 49th minute. Just over four minutes later, the Gaels evened the contest as Porco scored off a rebound that came on an initial saved shot by Stephanie Sommers.
The Maroon & Gold pulled ahead at the 68 minute mark when Dixon crossed the ball from the right side and landed it in the left side of the net. Mariel Pepe earned an assist on the play. Kelly Mahoney made nine saves while allowing one goal.
"We all played very hard and we wanted this game very much," said Porco. "We came out with a high intensity and played 100 percent the enitre game and were able to come out on top."
Head coach Eric Teepe added, "For us we did a great job showing we were able to come back after falling behind. Even though we carried the play in the first half, we gave up a goal early in the second half and it could have been a point where our players gave up. Not only did we come back with the two goals, but we ended up fighting and creating other opportunities and were able to hold on in the last few minutes for the win."
Iona will close out the regular season with three games at Mazzella Field beginning with a match against Fairfield at 12:30 pm on Oct. 24.
