NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team posted its ninth win in the last 12 games with a 3-0 shutout over Rider at Mazzella Field. The victory marked the eighth time this year the Gaels have kept their opponent scoreless.
Junior goalkeeper
Nils Binstock made two saves in the match and continues to improve his career record for shutouts in a season, now with seven.
Iona got all the scoring action it would need in the 13th minute when
Roberto Hernandez-Raaen recorded the game-winner on his first career goal.
Mario Rios set off a cross from the left side which was redirected in front of the net by Hernandez-Raaen for the tally.
With a 1-0 lead entering the second half, the Gaels made another notch on the scoreboard as Ally Lo accepted a pass from Rios in the middle of the field and finished off the run with a shot past Broncs keeper Chris Pimentel in the 50th minute. Rios earned his second assist of the day on the play. The Maroon & Gold extended its advantage shortly thereafter as
Fernando Liserra and
Giovanni Destasio connected for Destasio's career-best tenth goal at the 54:42 mark.
Iona out shot Rider 24-7, attempting nine shots on goal, and also led 8-3 in corner kicks.
The Gaels will play their next two games in western NY, first facing Canisius in a 7:00 pm night cap on Oct. 31.
