NEW ROCHELLE, NY - With less than one minute expired from the clock, Giovanni Destasio scored his sixth goal of the season to give Iona an early lead for good, and Daniel Indellicati added his first score of the year in the second half as the Iona College men's soccer team defeated Fairfield 2-0 at Mazzella Field.
The victory was the seventh consecutive for the Maroon & Gold and the fourth straight by 2-0 shutout. The occasion also marked the first time since the 2003 season that Iona has beaten Fairfield.
Destasio recorded his marker just 55 seconds into the match. Mario Rios knocked a pass over to Aly Lo, whose shot was saved by Stag goalkeeper Justin Burse. Destasio reigned in the deflection off of Burse and kicked it into the back of the net. The Gaels took 12 shots in the opening half but had no more luck while the Iona defense was able to put a stop on the Fairfield attack.
The score remained 1-0 for much of the contest until Indellicati provided the Gaels with a small cushion in the 72nd minute. Keith Wood accepted a throw-in from Taurean Manders and handed the ball over to Indellicati, who dropped it into the far left corner past Burse.
Iona led 3-1 in corner kicks and 10-5 in shots on goal. Junior netminder Nils Binstock made five saves to pick up his sixth win and fifth shutout of the season. Binstock has now held his opponents scoreless for a consecutive 393 minutes and 37 seconds.
The Gaels will face their final non-league opponent, Boston College, on Oct. 11 at 1:00 pm in Boston.
