NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A one goal margin in second-half output proved to be the difference in Iona's 4-3 loss to Manhattan this afternoon at Mazzella Field. Two Gaels, junior Kendra Chisolm and sophomore Laura Ruocco, recorded their first goals of the season.
The Maroon & Gold charged to a 1-0 lead on Chisolm's first goal in the 30th minute. Chisolm scored from inside the box off a pass from Lauren Machtel, who continued an initial feed from Mariel Pepe. Two minutes later, the Jaspers pulled even on Christine Reina's first of two goals in the match.
Manhattan broke the 1-1 tie in the 50th minute and added two more tallies over the following 15 minutes to earn a 4-1 advantage.
Down by three, Iona refused to be counted out and mounted a come-from-behind effort late in the half. Chisolm's second goal of the contest, assisted by Diane Hare, pulled the Gaels to within two with just under six minutes left to play. Mariel Pepe exerted a corner kick in the 88th minute which was taken by the foot of Ruocco who launched it into the back of the net. The visiting Jaspers held onto a one goal lead over the final two minutes as Iona came up just shy.
Goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard played 90 minutes in front of the net for the Gaels, making five saves.
Iona will host Saint Peter's in its final game of the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 12:00 pm.
