BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team picked up its second consecutive win and its tenth in the last 13 games with a 2-1 win over Canisius on the road. The Gaels improved their overall record to 10-4-1 and are 4-2-0 in conference play.
The Maroon & Gold took an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the third minute on a shot by Fernando Liserra from the top of the box. While in the air, the shot deflected off a Canisius defender and went into the back of the net for Liserra's third goal of the year.
The Golden Griffins evened the match later in the half with a goal by Eddie Powell in the 34th minute. Mario Rios collected the game-winner for the Gaels early in the second half. Rios made a move toward the middle of the field and fired a shot into the upper left corner.
Goalkeepers Adam Miller (Canisius) and Nils Binstock (Iona) each made seven saves at opposite ends of the field. Binstock picked up the victory, his career-leading ninth win of the season, as Iona finished with a 17-12 shot advantage and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
The Gaels will play their final game away from home on Sunday, Nov. 2 with a 1:00 pm match-up at Niagara.
