PEPE HELPS PROPEL GAELS PAST RIDER, 1-0

Lawrenceville, NJ - A game-winning goal by Mariel Pepe in the 59th minute lifted the Iona College women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout over Rider.  The Gaels improved to 1-1 in MAAC play while the Broncs fell to 0-2.

Both squads took three shots on goal in the first half, all of which were saved by goalkeepers Kelly Mahoney (Iona) and Alex Post (Rider).  Following a scoreless first, the Gaels charged into the second half taking five more shots on goal in the period.

At the 58:46 mark, Pepe was able to reach a loose ball eight yards out and finished the drive with a shot into the back of the net.  The Maroon & Gold's defense protected the 1-0 lead to preserve the win.

"I felt we did a good job controlling the play and creating chances to score," said head coach Eric Teepe.  "It was positive that we continued fighting and created better chances throughout the game."

Mahoney wrapped up with five saves in the contest while Iona led 3-0 in corner kicks.

"We played with a high intensity throughout the game and played really well as a team for 90 minutes," commented Pepe.  "We'll go into our home games next weekend and continue to come on strong."

The Gaels face Canisius at 3:00 pm on Oct. 10 in a pair of weekend match-ups at Mazzella Field.
