NIAGARA UNIV., NY - Unable to climb out of a 3-0 hole, the Iona College men's soccer team ended a two-game winning streak with a 3-1 loss at Niagara.
The Purple Eagles (11-4-2) had opened up a wide lead midway through the first half before the Gaels (10-5-1, 4-3-0 MAAC) were able were able to break onto the scoreboard. Niagara's production came from seniors Matthew Durand, Eric Brodfuehrer and Billy Gustafson with Durand scoring the initial goal in the 19th minute. Brodfuehrer made it 2-0 three minutes later, and Gustafson scored following a Niagara free kick in the 38th minute.
Iona gained one back with two minutes remaining in the opening half as
Giovanni Destasio got help from
Rodrigo Faria to score his eleventh goal of the year.
Despite six shot attempts in the second half, the Maroon & Gold wouldn't cut any further into the Purple Eagle's lead and were dealt a loss for just the fifth time this season. Iona edged Niagara 16-14 in shots on the day, while goalkeeper
Nils Binstock recorded three saves.
The Gaels return to New Rochelle to play their final two games of the regular season at Mazzella Field. They host Siena on Nov. 7 at 3:00 pm.
