NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team closed its 2008 season with a 4-0 shutout victory over Saint Peter's at Mazzella Field. The Gaels made the most of senior day with both of the squad's graduates recording goals in the win.
Iona wasted no time attempting to score, registering 12 shots in the first half over the Peahens' four. The Maroon & Gold assumed a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on
Diane Hare's first goal of the season, which would be all the team would need to finish on top.
After a saved shot by
Kendra Chisolm got away from Saint Peter's goalkeeper Reanna Gibbs, graduating senior
Julianne Marinaro took possession of the ball and put it into the back of the net to push Iona's lead to 2-0.
Much of the second half went by scorelessly with the Gaels adding ten more shots in the period. With less than three minutes remaining on the clock, Iona doubled its advantage with back-to-back goals by
Mariel Pepe and senior
Devon Whalen. Pepe's goal came at the 87:24 mark, and Whalen added the capper at 88:56 to record her first career goal in her final appearance in Maroon & Gold.
