NEW ROCHELLE, NY - With an 80-47 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-3), the Iona College women's basketball team (5-1) has won two straight games and five of its first six contests. Thazina Cook was the high scorer with 18 points, followed by Kristina Ford with 13.
Also scoring in double figures for the Gaels were Tomica Bacic (11 pts) and Anda Ivkovic (10 pts). Casey Morton had 11 points to lead the Hawks.
Iona pulled ahead on a three point field goal by Ivkovic in the first minute and never gave up the lead. The two teams traded baskets over several possessions, leading to an 8-6 score at the 16:47 mark. Fregosi, who had eight points and nine assists on the evening, made a layup at 16:32 to begin a 30-4 Iona run which put the hosts up by 28 points with 7:07 to go in the first half.
The Gaels and Hawks then traded off pairs of free throws around a Milica Paligoric bucket. Trailing 48-19, Josephine McLane knocked down a three pointer for Maryland-Eastern Shore for the final basket of the half.
Iona remained in control throughout the second half, taking its largest lead of the game on a trifecta by Ford to make it at 39-point spread at 79-40 with 5:05 to go.
The Gaels held a 37-32 advantage on the boards and scored 40 points off of the Hawks' 37 turnovers. Iona made a season-high ten three-pointers.
The Iona Thanksgiving Classic resumes tomorrow (Sunday), with Iona taking on Western Michigan at 3:30 pm.
