GAELS RALLY TO BEAT FORDHAM, 72-69

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team came back from a 13-point defecit with less than ten minutes remaining to pull out a three-point victory over Fordham at the Hynes Athletics Center.  Anda Ivkovic and Thazina Cook both scored over 20 points as the Gaels improved to 8-2 with their third consecutive win.  The Rams dropped to 4-5.

After Iona took a 2-0 lead to open the game, Fodham climbed to a 10-4 advantage, hitting four of six shots from the floor including two three-pointers.  The Rams stayed in front and led by eight following a layup by Takita Earl at the 7:53 mark.

The Maroon & Gold scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a one point lead with 4:39 to go in the half.  The lead was short-lived, however, as Fordham moved back in front on a pair of free throws by Randall Hurst.  Down by six with less than a minute on the clock, Suzi Fregosi netted a three-point basket to cut the margin in half and the Gaels went into halftime trailing by three.

Fordham continued to be dangerous from long distance, sinking three trifectas in the first three minutes of the second half to take a 12 point lead.  Ivkovic scored eight of Iona's next 12 points as the Gaels climbed to within two with 14:13 left to play, but the Rams then went on a 15-4 run to push the lead back to 13 at 9:59.

Never allowing themselves to be counted out, the Gaels steadily came back to tie the game at 64-64 on a three-pointer by Cook with 2:08 remaining.  Cook added another one from downtown to give Iona the final lead of the contest with 34 seconds left.

Ivkovic ended with 23 points and six rebounds, while Cook had 22 points and five rebounds.  Fregosi netted eight points and dished out a career-best ten assists.

Becky Peters led the Rams with 23 points.  Fordham shot 75% from three point range against Iona, who had previously held its opponents to just 22.1%.

The Gaels move on to face Purdue on Dec. 13 with a 7:00 pm road match-up.
