KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -David Kool scored a game-high 19 points, leading Western Michigan to a 68-55 win over Iona on Thursday night.
Donald Lawson and Shawntes Gary each scored 12 for Western Michigan (3-8), which broke a four-game losing streak. Gary also pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.
Jermel Jenkins, a freshman guard, came off the bench and led Iona (4-6) with a career-high 13 points. Scott Machado scored 10, and 7-foot center Jonathan Huffman had eight rebounds.
Kool scored eight points in the first four minutes of the game, when Western Michigan took an 11-2 lead, and hit his first four shots.
Iona never led in the game, but chiseled a 13-point deficit to two points, 45-43, with 10:43 left in the game on a 3-point basket by Huffman. A full-court trapping defense by Iona limited the Broncos to just two baskets in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
The Broncos answered with a 10-2 run, and Western Michigan cruised from there.
