Buffalo, NY - The Iona College Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving team competed in
their second MAAC meet of the 2008-09 as they went on the road to
Canisius. The Women's team claimed a 131-103 victory over the Golden
Griffins, but the men's squad couldn't edge ahead falling 127-100. The
Gaels touched the wall first in 12 of the 26 events.
The Maroon and Gold got off to a good start as the 400 Yard Medley relay team of Maggie Wood, Jamie Manser, Samantha Cody and Amanda Cody touched the wall first with a time of 4:08.95. Iona took three of the next four events including the Men's and Women's 1000 Free and the Women's 200 Free. Christine Larkin swam a tremendous race as she came in with a time of 10:57.61, almost 30 seconds ahead of second place in the 1000 Free. Raymond Joyal had as good a race in the Men's 1000 with a time of 10:42.10. McKenzie Mone was involved in a close race, but touched the wall first in the 200 Free at 1:59.83.
Amanda Cody and Seth Tasman each picked up another victory this season in their respective 50 Free race. Cody came in at 25.34 while Tasman touched the wall at 22.22, thirty-eight seconds ahead of his teammate Ed Gronkowski as Iona went 1-2. Cody picked up her second first place finish on the afternoon in the 100 Free (54.86). Larkin was also a double winner with her second victory coming in the 500 Free (5:24.03). Samantha Cody picked up victory in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:15.94 and David Gartman touched first in the 200 Yard IM at 2:03.82, nearly a minute ahead of second place.
The final two wins for the Gaels came in the final events of the meet: the 400 Free Medley. The women's team of Caitlin McGregor, Dana Patterson, Megan McNeely and Mone finished in a time of 3:50.77. Just behind them was the relay team of Angela Kohlhoff, Amanda Anastasio, Brittany Freeman and Larkin at 3:52.83 giving the Gaels another 1-2 finish. On the men's side, Gronkowski, Graham Weir, Matt Kolb and Patrick St. Cin took first in the relay with a time of 3:18.66.
Iona returns to the pool after the New Year to partcipate in a home mini-camp on Januray 8th before heading down to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale for the program's annual trip.
