BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Iona College women's basketball team (7-2, 2-0 MAAC) earned its second straight victory and its fourth in the last five games with a 62-44 win over Fairfield (4-4, 1-1 MAAC) at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The Gaels have now won nine consecutive match-ups against the Stags going back to the 2004-05 season.
Sophomore Anda Ivkovic was dominant in the first half, during which she scored 17 of her 18 points. Freshman Kristina Ford finished with 16 points and six rebounds, and Suzi Fregosi added seven points, four assists, and four steals.
Stephanie Geehan had a double-double for Fairfield, leading the team with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Stags led initially, scoring the first two points of the day and held their last lead at 18:56 in the first half with a 4-3 edge. Thazina Cook slipped through with a layup at the 18:38 mark to put Iona in control for the rest of the contest. The Gaels out scored the Stags 28-16 from that point to lead 33-20 at halftime.
The second half began with a jumper by Ford that increased Iona's advantage to 15 points. The Maroon & Gold's largest lead of the afternoon was a 22-point spread with 4:52 remaining in the game, and the squad never let Fairfield get any closer than 15 points in the second half.
Both teams were even off the glass, picking up 40 rebounds each. The Gaels held the Stags to just 18 percent shooting on 2-of-11 from three point range.
Iona returns to non-conference action as it hosts Fordam at 7:30 pm on Dec. 10.
