Baltimore, MD - The Iona College women's basketball team grabbed the lead at Loyola and never looked back, as the Gaels (13-8, 7-3 MAAC) squelched the Greyhounds (8-12, 3-7 MAAC) 90-68. The win was the third straight and ninth in eleven games for the Maroon and Gold while Loyola was handed a fifth consecutive loss.
Freshman Anda Ivkovic and junior Anna McLean both totaled 17 points to lead the game. Ivkovic did her damage in only 12 minutes on the court with a 3-3 turnout from three point range, and McLean hit 8-8 from the floor while adding nine rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.
Iona broke a 4-4 tie by scoring 21 of the game's next 28 points to take a 25-11 lead with 11 minutes remaining on a Shezaray Rozzell layup. Loyola managed to cut the edge below double figures just once more before halftime, as nine of the ten Gaels who saw playing time scored in the period.
The Gaels commited just four turnovers in the first half while picking up 16 points on 14 turnovers by the Greyhounds.
Loyola pulled within 12 points at 53-41 with 17:20 left in the game, but Iona used a 17-9 run to push the lead back to 20 at 70-50 with 9:51 remaining behind Ivkovic's three-point play. The Gaels held their largest lead at 90-65 when Jen Ritz came off the bench to sink a three-pointer with 75 seconds remaining.
Following the regular season sweep of Loyola, Iona will host Niagara on alumni day, Sunday, at the Hynes Athletics Center. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
