SENIORS SHINE ON SENIOR DAY IN 87-75 WIN OVER MANHATTAN

Box Score New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College men's basketball senior quartet of Kyle Camper, Devon Clarke, Dexter Gray, and John Kelly led the Gaels (12-19, 8-10 MAAC) to a come-from-behind 87-75 win over Manhattan. The four players combined for 48 of the team's 87 points in the Senior Day win at the Hynes Center.

It was the Jaspers (11-18, 5-13 MAAC) that came out firing to start the game, taking an 18-9 lead five minutes into the contest on freshman Rashad Green's dunk at the 15:03 mark. Back-to-back three pointers by junior Devon Austin gave Manhattan its largest lead of the game, 28-15, with just over 11 minutes to play in the half. After trailing by 12 at the 9:33 mark, freshman Rashon Dwight's layup sparked a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to 35-32 with 5:36 to play. Freshman Andrew Gabriel gave Manhattan its last double-digit lead of the game converting a conventional three point play with 1:41 left. A De'Shaune Griffin jumper was sandwiched between two Kelly layups as Iona ended the half on a 6-2 run and trailed 47-41 at the break.

Despite the six-point deficit, the Gaels shot an incredible 72.7% in the first half, missing just four shots from inside the arc (15-of-19, 1-for-3 3-pt FG). Manhattan shot 51.6% in the half, but it was the 11-5 turnover margin in favor of the visitors that was the difference.

After Austin converted a jumper to open the scoring in the second half, the Gaels scored 21 of the games next 27 points over the next eight minutes to take a nine-point, 64-55 lead at 11:09. Gray's layup tied the score at 52-52 with 14:10 to play. On Iona's next possession, junior Gary Springer put the Gaels ahead for good on a layup of his own. Back-to-back Kelly layups on a nice high-low feed from Clarke put Iona head by double-digits for the first time at 10:11. Sophomore walk-on John Hans gave the Gaels their largest lead of the game, 85-69, burying a three pointer from the win with 25 ticks left.

Clarke led all scorers with 16 points. He shot 5-of-6 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line, adding three assists in 27 minutes of play. Kelly tallied a career-high 14 points while recording a game-high eight rebounds for the Gaels. He was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. Springer recorded 13 points and six boards, converting 4-of-5 of his shot attempts and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Gray had 12 points while Camper added six points and six assists. Coming off the bench for just the third time this season, Dwight had a fine game for the Maroon & Gold tallying nine points and a career-high seven assists in the win.

Iona shot a season-high 62.7% from the field and 83.3% from the free throw line and held a commanding 35-24 advantage on the boards. After committing 11 turnovers in the first half, the Gaels took care of the ball with just four in the second. Another key factor was limiting the Jaspers to just 28.0% shooting in the second half.

Four players for Manhattan recorded double-digits, led by sophomore Antoine Pearson's 15.

The Gaels complete the regular season with eight conference wins, seven more than a season ago. The team will serve as the No. 7 seed in next weekend's 2008 Citizen's Bank MAAC Championship in Albany, NY. Iona takes on No. 10 Canisius on Friday night (Mar. 7) at 10:00 pm. The game is slated to be televised live on MSG-TV with the winner to face No. 2 Rider the following night.
