West Long Branch, NJ - After tying game at 1-all in the 82nd minute, the Iona College women's soccer team suffered a literal last minute defeat by Monmouth. The Hawks scored on a break-away goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the match to seal a 2-1 victory.
Monmouth was the first to reach the scoreboard as Mary Wilks headed a corner kick from Ali Kliment in the 34th minute. The Gaels leveled the count at 1-1 when Julianne Marinaro lifted a cross into the Hawks' box, which made its way through the Monmouth defense to a waiting Alison Moroni, who laced a one-timer by the host team's goalkeeper. Moroni picked up her first goal of the season and Marinaro her first assist.
First-year goalie Kelly Mahoney guarded the net for the Maroon & Gold, recording four saves.
Iona travels to the west coast for a pair of contests in California over the upcoming weekend. The Gaels first take on Pacific on Sep. 19 beginning at 10:00 pm eastern time.
