New Rochelle, NY - Two goals in the first half was all it took for the Iona College men's soccer team (4-2-0) to post a 2-0 shutout victory over Sacred Heart (1-4-0). The Gaels dropped their first two games of the season but have now won four straight.
The Maroon & Gold jumped on the board in the 21st minute to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Aly Lo dribbled up the left side off a feed from junior Giovanni Destasio and left-footed the ball by Pioneer goalkeeper Matt Jones and into the right corner of the net. Fernando Liserra added an unassisted insurance goal as the half neared an end, hooking a free kick around a line of Sacred Heart defenders for his second score of the year.
Gael netminder Nils Binstock made two saves and earned his second shutout of 2008. Iona led 8-6 in shots on the day, while the Pioneers claimed a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Gaels will host Drexel on Sunday, Sep. 21 in a 1:00 pm match-up.
