New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team was defeated by Hartford, 2-1 at Mazzella Field. Freshman Ashley Gillies scored early in the first half to put the Gaels ahead 1-0, but the Hawks soon caught up and surpassed Iona in the second half.
The goal by Gillies came in the 12th minute and was the first of her career. Gillies scored from close range on an assist by Ali Werner.
Just two and a half minutes later, however, Hartford's Lauren Aldred found the back of the net to even the score with Kacey Busque chipping in on the play. Busque then went on to record the game-winner for the Hawks with less than ten minutes remaining in the contest.
Despite the loss Iona held an 18-12 advantage in shots, seven on goal. Hartford had a slight 6-4 edge in corner kicks. First-year goalkeeper Kelly Mahoney showed poise and demonstrated great range in her position as she made eight saves on the day.
The Maroon & Gold will complete a two-game homestand on Sunday, hosting NJIT at 3:00 pm.
