NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A free throw by
Marissa Flagg and another pair from
Thazina Cook with just seconds remaining put the Iona College women's basketball team on top in a 58-55 win over Fairfield at the Hynes Athletics Center. The Gaels broke a three-game winless streak, improving their record to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC.
Cook was Iona's high-scorer with 14 points and was followed by 11 from
Anda Ivkovic and ten from
Kristina Ford. Of the eight players who saw time on the floor for the Maroon & Gold, seven reached the scoring column.
The Stags' Baendu Lowenthal led her team with 15 points while Lauren Groom had ten.
After the Gaels took an initial 3-0 lead on a trifecta by
Suzi Fregosi, Fairfield utilized an 8-0 run to move ahead by five at the 14:34 mark. The Stags remained in front for much of the first half, with Iona tying the score on two occasions before regaining the lead on a Ford jumper with 4:39 to go in the period.
Behind 28-25 to start the second half, Fairfield scored ten of 12 points to lead 35-30 with 15:31 on the clock. The two teams swapped the advantage a number of times from that point, bringing the game to a 55-55 tie with under a minute remaining. Flagg was fouled with five seconds to go and hit one-of-two from the stripe to put Iona ahead for the final time. Cook then made a pair of free throws to seal the three-point win.
The Gaels return to action away from home, playing at Siena at 7:00 pm on Jan. 16.
