NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with its third consecutive win in a 3-0 shutout over NJIT. The Gaels (6-1-2) were led offensively by senior
Giovanni Destasio who had two goals in the victory.
Despite a 13-5 shot advantage in the first half, Iona didn't break onto the scoreboard until the second period. Destasio received a feed from classmate
Fernando Liserra before being fouled in the box to set up a penalty shot situation in the 65th minute. On his second such attempt in as many games, Destasio sunk the ball into the right corner of the net to record the game-winning goal.
Destasio struck again three and a half minutes later with his eighth tally of the season, this time on a double-assist from Liserra and rookie
Alvaro Torrecilla. With the Maroon & Gold leading 2-0, Torrecilla picked up a goal of his own - the first of his career - to close out the scoring in the 82nd minute.
Goalkeeper
Nils Binstock made four saves in his 20th career shutout. Ryan Sutherland saved ten for the visiting Highlanders.
Iona opens league play at Siena with a 7:00 pm contest on Oct. 9.
