JERSEY CITY, NJ - After taking a 1-0 lead late in the first half, the Iona College women's soccer team never looked back en route to a 2-0 victory over Saint Peter's in conference action on the road. The Gaels recorded their fourth win in five games and improved their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record to 3-2 (6-9-1 overall).
Freshman Leah Taylor scored on an unassisted shot with just under three minutes remaining in the opening period to give Iona the only edge it would need for the afternoon. The Maroon & Gold added an insurance goal in the 79th minute when senior Amber Blocher scored her third goal of the year following a corner kick by rookie Gabriella D'Aprile. D'Aprile earned her second career assist on the play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Mahoney made four saves over the 90 minutes to get her fourth win and second shutout of 2009. Caitlin Hoffer had one save for the Peahens.
The Gaels begin their final homestand of the year when they host Loyola at 3:00 pm on Oct. 16.
