POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team extended its winning streak to five games with a 2-1 victory over Marist on the road. The Gaels are now 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play and improve their overall record to 8-1-2 while the Red Foxes drop to 0-2 in the MAAC and 4-6-1 overall.
Iona took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute as senior Giovanni Destasio netted his ninth goal of the year. Destasio handled a through ball from freshman Alvaro Torrecilla and dropped it into the back of the net from a five yard distance. Sophomore Adam Rohan pushed the Gael advantage to 2-0 four and a half minutes later, scoring on a shot from 25 yards out on the right wing.
Marist pulled to within one in the second half but would get no closer. Troy Confessore scored his second goal of the season for the Red Foxes off a direct kick by Nico Mossa.
Iona led 15-6 in shots while senior goalkeeper Nils Binstock made two saves for his eighth win of 2009. Joe Pilla had five saves for host Marist.
The Gaels continue MAAC action on the road, facing off against Fairfield at 7:00 pm on Oct. 17.
